Kerala: Holidays & Health

In a special collector's issue released just before the turn of the new millennium, National Geographic Traveller gifted the tourists of the world with a priceless treasure - a well researched compilation of “50 Destinations of a Lifetime”. The only Indian destination that featured in it was Kerala other than the Taj Mahal in the World Wonders section. Kerala was celebrated as a 'Paradise Found' - one of the ten in all the world. A perfect description for a land renowned as "God's Own Country". What adds to the charm of its backwaters, beaches, Ayurveda health holidays, hill stations, wildlife, festivals, monuments and vibrant art forms, is its amazing social development indices that are on par with the developed world. Nearly a hundred percent literate people. Worldclass health care system. India's lowest infant mortality and highest life expectancy rate. The highest physical quality of life in India. Peaceful and pristine, Kerala is also India's cleanest state. In the mornings, from nearly anywhere in Kerala, you can hear loud music from the Hindu temples, wailing muezzins at the mosques, and church bells ringing at the cathedrals. Religious tolerance is just one reason for Kerala's success..

When to visit? Anytime! Generally the tourist season in Kerala is between October and March, when it is relatively cooler. April, May and June are the warmest months and is followed by the South West Monsoon that starts in the latter half of June and continues up to early September. The Monsoon enters the country at the southern tip of Kerala and drenches the land with rains. July, August and September are considered the perfect time to experience Ayurveda, whether it is a Rejuvenation programme or a complete treatment. After the Monsoon, Kerala is at its greenest and the temperature dips a little. The Onam festival usually falls between the last few weeks of August and early September. Being on the coast, Kerala is humid, though not unbearable, on the contrary, it is pleasantly windy.
